Friendship, Hunting, Welding, & Table Tennis

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

I have a really great group of friends. We have been tight ever since junior high. All of us enjoy the same things, so it is easy to have a good time. One thing we really enjoy is hunting. Birds, big game, small game, varmints, predators, its all good. We spent every fall weekend during high school out roughing it. Well, I use the term roughing it very loosely. My buddys family owns 700 acres of prime hunting land with a very comfortable cabin (read house) on the property. We had it all; TV, satellite, video games, you name it.

But when we werent out in the woods, guess what we did? We played table tennis. Yes ping-pong, that classic game of wit, strength, skill, speed, and the ability to perfectly skip the ball off of the table and into your friends nose. We looked forward to our table tennis grudge matches almost as much as our outdoor pursuits. The games usually lasted until midnight or later. This may not seem late to you, but after getting up at 5 AM to sit in a duck blind all day, staying up that late for anything was a sacrifice. But it was worth it.

We all have our arch rivals. It may be in school, or work, or even in your family. I dont mean rival in the comic book sense, I mean someone with whom you are always in competition with for something. Well, I am no different. There was one of my buddies who was pretty good at table tennis. In fact, it was always one of us who left for home with the title of the best ponger (ya, I know its not a word).

On one particular trip we decided to have a winner takes all tournament on the last night of the hunt, with a best of seven playoff to decide the champion. It would be like the NBA finals, only without the celebrities, TV coverage, intensity, money, fans, general interest, athletes, and, ok, it was to be nothing like the NBA finals. Little did I know that in order for me to win, my buddy, who well call John, would have to be electrocuted. Yes electrocuted, shocked, zapped, fried, not to death, but enough to throw off his game anyway.

In exchange for our liberal use of my friends family property, we always did jobs when we went out there. We would spend a couple of hours each day doing work. Our tasks included; drywall installation, painting, hanging doors, building a deck, and on the day of the tournament, welding a steel porch in the rain. Yeah, I know that it doesnt seem like a smart idea, but high school guys are really, really tough (until they get a good current flowing through them).

So there we are working away happily in the drizzle. The smack talk was pouring down like the bothersome rain, only slightly thicker. Out of nowhere the welder stops working. What the heck bro? I ask John as he pulls up his welders mask. Must not be grounded well he mutters as he fiddles with the connections, his hands soaking wet as he stands in a large puddle. ZAP! The fuse trips as his body stiffens and he falls back into the mud.

Now before I go any further, I do understand the seriousness and danger of electricity, and that this could have been much worse, but he was fine. After we asserted that john was okay, we put up the tools and went inside. We even had a good laugh about our stupidity.

Now on to the tournament. Although John was to have no complications from the accident, he could not hit the ball to save his life. I would serve to him and he would completely miss the ball. He was having little aftershocks and his body was still dealing with what had happened. Now, a true friend would re-schedule the match, but not me. I wasted him. I felt kind of bad until the next trip when he stole my crown in a way that left no doubt. I think he even pelted me a few times just for fun. The moral of the story? I dont think there is one. Just dont beat up on a recently shocked buddy in table tennis or he will come back at you with a vengeance.

Omaha Steaks Possibly The Worlds Finest Steaks

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Among the finest sources for steaks available, Omaha Steaks is renowned for providing high quality beef and gourmet products to customers across the country and around the world. Their name is well-known among cooks and grillmasters thanks to their continued commitment to providing the best food available. And Omaha Steaks works to make sure that they deliver on that commitment.

Starting in 1917, Omaha Steaks built its reputation on supplying high quality Midwestern steaks to people and businesses looking for choice cuts of excellent beef. This family owned business started out in Omaha, Nebraska and has kept its headquarters there throughout its history and expansion. And this expansion has seen the business stretch into areas including food service, mail order, incentive marketing, telesales, retail and even online sales. And with each successive step, Omaha Steaks further cements its reputation as the place to turn to when looking for quality beef.

However, despite their name, beef is not the only thing on offer from Omaha Steaks. In fact, they also provide very good selections of poultry, veal, pork and lamb and have even moved into offerings of pastas, side dishes and desserts for their customers. And as Omaha Steaks continues to grow, they will undoubtedly expand into new areas of food offerings, giving their customers even more options when they look to Omaha Steaks. And with this wide selection, customers can put something on the menu for those people who want something tasty, but dont want it to be as heavy as steak.

In order to serve their customers better, Omaha Steaks provides a few ways to shop. The most common method for purchasing Omaha Steaks products is through their mail order and online business. Their steaks are shipped to ensure delivery within seven days of going out, so they will still be fresh when they arrive. Omaha Steaks takes every precaution to ensure that their food is just as good when it arrives as the day it was packed. Which means that your purchases will be consistently excellent.

However, some areas have access to Omaha Steaks through their retail stores. This growing portion of the business is not as large as their mail order and online services, but it is expanding as the company moves into new markets. This not only allows people to have a more personal experience while they are choosing just the right steak, but also gives people the opportunity to take their selections home immediately and get them on the grill in no time. And, as you would expect, their retail stores provide the same level of quality and commitment to excellence as every other portion of their business.

By taking pride in their service and the quality of their products, Omaha Steaks has moved from a small business in Nebraska to a multinational company providing its customers with a wide selection of foods that have them coming back again and again. And by taking care to take care of their customers, Omaha Steaks is making sure that they are always worth coming back to.

My Secrets of Choosing a Digital Camera

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

When shopping for a digital camera, there are a few things that you should consider. It is not only to get the cheapest digital camera or the model with the most functions. Check out my list and than go and find the right camera model for your special purposes.

Size
Small is beautiful. Todays digital cameras are sometimes so small, that they fit into the breast pocket of your shirt easily and are still fully featured so you get the most out of the camera in almost every situation. Just imagine taking a picture of a wonderful sunrise when your are on your morning run or the happy smile of your kids when you pick them up after school. With a small digital camera you don’t have to lug around heavy equipment, you are always ready to take the picture of your life.
But too small could be a nightmare for someone with large hands or big fingers. In this case it is not practical and the fingers could cover the lens, the internal flash or could not work the tiny buttons to select the diverse functions, a modern digital camera offers.

A larger, heavier digital camera is useful when you want to do more serious work. Think about taking pictures where the internal flash is disabled and you work with longer shutter speeds. A heavier camera is easier to hold steady and it can better compensate the tine movement when you press the shutter button.

System
there are many different kinds of cameras on the markiet today. The consumer has the choice between an ever increasing number of brands, but mainly his decision is based on what what he wants to use the camera for and what his past experiences with photography are.

Viewfinder cameras
this is the most simple system on the market. The viewfinder is located in the upper left corner of the camera (seen from the rear) and presents a picture that is slightly offset to what the camera really sees. When you are very close to an object, the difference in view can be dramatic.
This type of digital camera works very good for snapshots as well as for most photographic needs of the average person. Disadvadvantages are the fixed lenses, the lack of influence you can take on the picture (e.g. sharpness, focus, light).

Some more advanced models also use the small LCD monitor as a viewfinder. The advantage here is that the picture you see on the screen is the same that you will take with your camera. You have good control of what you will put into your picture. Disadvantage witht his type of display is that you cannot preview the pictures in a brightly lit environment. Taking pictures in brought daylight is sometimes difficult as you try to hold the camera stready and also shade the lcd.

Bridge cameras
this type of camera is more heavyset than the usual compact digital camera. Usually it features a fixed lens with a good zoom factor. Ranging from wide angle to telephoto, you can cover most photographic challenges with these models. They offer a trough the lens view finder, which gives you a correct impression of the photo you are going to take, regardles of focus length. The picture is projected on the CCD chip in the camera and projected on a small monitor that is either inside the camera positioned like on traditional cameras or on the back panel of the camera body.
These cameras are usually more capable of changing photographic parameters and are used by people who want to do more than the occasional snapshot.

Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex)
this is the most advanced type of digital camera on the market today. It works very similar to traditional SLR cameras, but using the digital process instead of film. You can choose different lenses for every possible purpose. Whether it is a wide angle lens for landscape photography or a small telephoto lens for doing portraits or close-up work. The lenses are interchangebel and you sometimes even get compatible lenses from thrid party manufactures that are of similar quality, but lower in price. The picture is reflected into the viewfinder via a mirror (this is why its called reflex). When you release the shutter to take the picture, the mirror is moved away, the shutter curtains open and the light is directly sent to the CCD chip. A small LCD screen on the back panel of the camera is used for doing a first check on picture quality and for setting the different features and options of the camera. Digital SLR cameras are usually used by professional photographers and high level enthusiasts.

Memory – Bigger Is Better
The advantage of digital cameras compared to traditional ones is that you can shoot as many pictures as the memory chip allows. Pics that turned out to be low quality can easily be discarded and again you have room on your memory card to take new pictures. As advantageous as it is, this circumstance leads to taking more pictures than with traditional cameras and as the resolution of the digital cameras increases from year to year, the need for memory increases. Therefore it may be useful to exchange the memory card that came with the camera with a bigger one or having a spare one when going on a longer trip. Below table lists the aproximate number of photos that fit on a 128 MB memory card when using the jpg-format:

Resolution \ Quality_____Best_____Good_____Standard
6 mpixel – 3008x2000_____34_______70_________117
4mpixel – 2400x1600______51_______96_________161
1.5 mpixel – 1536x1024___106______173_________271

The above quality rating is based on the compression factor of the jpg format (higher compression results in smaller files, but in lower picture quality).

Now, I wish you good luck with shopping for a new digital camera.

Why Are You Buying That Car?

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Before buying a car new or used you should ask yourself why exactly do you need a car. Other than the obvious reason of having convenient transportation, are there any other pressing reasons for buying a car?

You should try to identify the reasons for buying a car and justifying if they are indeed valid reasons. Perhaps it is a necessity like requiring inexpensive transportation to and from work. Or, maybe you are a work at home mom or dad and need a vehicle to haul children around to school and various other activities. Regardless of your reasons, make certain that purchasing the car is for a valid purpose and not just because you want to outdo your neighbors.

The following are basic questions and reasons you should consider when making that all important car purchase:

How They Treat You – Though not always true, when buying cars, you could get many ideas just by observing how car sales people deal with you. Usually, these non-verbal signals are fairly correct enough enabling you to know what to expect from your car purchase.

Is The Price Right? – The best time period to buy that car you have always dreamed of having is later in the month. Usually, there are numerous rebate programs and bonus offered by months end based on a dealers monthly sales quotas. The idea is that, sometimes dealers fall short of meeting their sales objectives. If their performance is assessed by the end of the month this can prove to be good news to most car buyers since dealers now have no choice but to sell vehicles at a price that is lower than their norm. They are pressed to make more sales that will count for their monthly sales and that puts you at an advantage as a buyer.

Peace of Mind – Sometimes dealers do a song and dance routine just to make that sale. The result is that often car buyers end up with car features they realize later on they do not really need and a price they actually could not afford. You can avoid this potential stress by always remembering to trust your instincts. If ever you feel in doubt, do not let yourself be pressured to making that purchase now.

Is The Dealership Trustworthy? – If at any time you feel that the person selling you the car is not trustworthy or simply do not like him or her, always remember that you have the option to leave. You are always free to politely walk away, anytime, anywhere, and in any way you like it. But if there are not many car dealers in your area, you may want to linger for a few moments more and wait until the negotiations you have with your dealer breaks down and you simply have no option but to run off.

The Invoice Price – Another thing to consider when buying a car is the invoice price. Make sure to ask that you see the invoice. If dealers are working their tails off against it, you have enough reason to believe that the car being offered is an unpleasant deal. Usually, the price on the invoice is the cost the dealer paid the manufacturer for buying the car. This is before any rebates or incentives were included. Once this is known, only then will you have an idea as to how much the dealer could profit from each vehicle sold.

Incentives – There are instances when manufacturers provide the dealers with a little something extra, like money, rebates or a bonus because they are able to sell cars that are either overstocked or undersold. Make sure that before actually purchasing a car, you were able to know if that car you are buying has some dealer incentives attached to it. If so, take off that amount from the cars purchase price and have yourself a very good deal and hopefully, a very good car as well.

Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price – This is commonly called the sticker price. This is the price one usually sees in the window of the car that is being sold. Never ever consider paying the amount stated on the sticker price. This amount is just the starting point to your negotiations with the dealer.

Finally, do not forget that you should always sleep on it and then decide. This is a lot better than making your mind up now and forever holding your peace!

Work Life Balance And The Power of Positive Thinking

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

It’s important to get a handle on mood swings or energy shifts if you want to maintain your work life balance and be successful in business. According to psychologist and researcher Martin Seligman, some folks appear to be hardwired to respond optimistically and hopefully to work life balance upset and life’s ups and downs. Others are wired for opposite responses. Fortunately, you do not have to settle for the wiring you were born with. With practice you can improve your resilience and your hopefulness by acquiring solid positive thinking skills.

I like to think of the process of building hopefulness, resilience and positive thinking skills as an analogue to building physical fitness: it takes attention, concentration, commitment, and repetition. If you approach a workout program with those qualities, you can almost always improve your fitness.

The first hurdle to get over is the belief that you already need to be different in order to succeed. You don’t. You are the way you are and you can start from here, overwhelmed, worried, anxious, whatever. Don’t fall into your story about how you feel, but take a stand for what you intend to accomplish to restore your work life balance and where you plan to go. You do not need to feel better before you try these practices — do them now. Another caveat: Do not interpret your progress in the short term — measuring increase in strength and endurance after a single workout would be silly.

Seligman points out that people with an optimistic approach to life habitually accept positive thoughts and dispute negative thoughts. Those of us who are wired to be more pessimistic tend to dispute the positive and accept the negative. Optimists tend to assume that their life balance will be restored, good events will happen again and that bad events are an exception; pessimists assume the reverse. I am oversimplifying his rigorously considered arguments, and I encourage you to read the book if the science of this is important to you.

Here’s a practice he recommends for shifting from hopelessness to hopefulness. I successfully use it with my clients to help them restore their work life balance. He calls it ABCDE for:

Adversity — Beliefs — Consequences — Disputation — Energization.

A – Adversity
Start by spelling out the nature of the situation. Notice that you can experience hopelessness in response to ostensibly positive situations as well as to negative ones. For example, getting a new client or being accepted into a final round of interviews can upset your balance and send you into a whirlwind of anxiety and fear that produces just as much hopelessness and overwhelm as not getting the job or not making the cut.

B — Beliefs
This is your opportunity to spell out the thoughts and beliefs that are fueling the negative response.

C — Consequences
Look at the consequences of your beliefs — what happened as a result? How do you behave? What happened then?

D — Disputation
Actively dispute the beliefs that break your life balance and send you into the downward spiral. This is where you practice arguing with yourself in a productive way.

E — Energization
When you have been effective in disputing the problem beliefs, you feel an influx of energy, a sense of renewed hope, or at least of peacefulness.

So, here’s an example from my life:

Adversity:
I was excited about moving forward on two projects when I fell on my bike and cracked my ribs. I was okay and working hard with this for almost three days, then depression and anxiety set in and my usual positive thinking ability left me. Instead of feeling like moving forward I felt like bursting into tears.

Beliefs:
How will I ever restore my work life balance and get things done if I can’t stop these mood swings? Maybe I am just not meant to lead these projects. I don’t know enough and I can’t seem to get started — I probably should have said no in the first place. It would be better to bow out now, as embarrassing as that will be, than to keep going and have a bigger train wreck later when I just can’t make the grade.

Consequences:
These beliefs leave me feeling very sad and small, like a six year old, and then I wonder how a six year old can possibly be a leader. I find it hard to concentrate and I just want to hide.

Disputation:
Constant low-grade pain can take it out of anyone. The world is not going to come to an end if you delay things because you’ve been injured. And who says you have to do it alone anyway? Some of the problem is that you don’t have enough information to go forward. That calls for making requests of others, not for blaming yourself. And when you’re not leaning on yourself so hard, your positive thinking ability starts coming back and your mood lightens — so maybe it would be smart to cut yourself some slack this week after letting folks know what is going on. You don’t have to crawl under a rock — you can reach out instead to restore your work life balance. And even if some work projects end up being passed on to others, there will always be other opportunities.

Energization:
I called and emailed colleagues to regroup. Not only did these conversations relieve my anxiety, they made simple next steps quite clear. In one case, my summary of a conversation ended up being exactly what our group needed to move forward. Who knew? I had been worried about making things happen on my own when all along my strength was in articulating and clarifying complex input from many sources.

See how this works? I do strongly recommend the book as there are many more practices in it that address different aspects of overwhelm and ways to restore your work life balance. But if you struggle with hopelessness and challenge yourself to work through this one exercise on a regular basis (and if that means five or ten times a day, so be it), your positive thinking skills will grow and you WILL get relief. Remember — don’t measure change before it can happen — keep doing the practices long enough for significant positive shifts to take root and grow.

Cyber-Bullying: Threat and Intimidation Online

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Ahh…the Internet…the amazing portal to a vast world of information, entertainment, and everything else in between. Internet technology has revolutionized the way we work, play, learn, and communicate. What started out as an experiment in a Harvard University laboratory is now one of the primary means by which people in the 21st century do business, exchange information, and relate with other people. Aside from its use as a research tool, the World Wide Web provides other services such as email, instant messaging, file sharing, online forums, and blogging. As a technology, it has made an impact on the social structure and behavior. As an example, there now actual cases of people who met online and later got married.

The 6 Top Reasons Marketers Should Blog

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

If there is a downside to blogging, I have yet to find it. The more you learn about blogging, the more there is to like.

In fact, here are 6 mouth-watering reasons why every marketer should be blogging:

1- Fast Search Engine Spidering and Indexing of Your Site:

Did you know that Google owns the most popular blogging platform on the planet? Blogger is used to produce thousands of blogs. Even a complete internet newbie can set up a blog in about 5 minutes at Blogger. And guess who can be counted on to come by and quickly spider all those new blog posts as they are written?

Yahoo is also embracing blogs and feeds in a big way. Savvy marketers know that adding their blogs and feeds to their MyYahoo page can bring the Yahoo spider to their site almost immediately.

One of the reasons that blogs get spidered so quickly is that most of them produce a feed. Many blogs automatically “ping” (or notify) some of the large sites that carry these feeds and make them available for syndication. Search engines spider these sites many times a day. Blogger, for instance, pings Weblogs every time you make a post. You can also “ping” a free site called Pingomatic every time you add a new blog post. Your ping will notify Yahoo and 11 other large feed sites that you’ve added a post. If it only were so easy to get Google to notice new pages on regular sites!

If you have a new site that you are having trouble getting indexed, adding a blog or RSS feed is one of the quickest ways to get the spiders to come calling.

2- Blogs can Build Your Backlinks Quickly:

If you’ve spent time trying to get reciprocal links to your site, you know how frustrating, boring, and time-consuming it can be. I’ve long considered reciprocal link building to be one of the worst ways to develop link popularity. Many SEO experts consider one-way links to be far more effective.

A blog can build one-way links to your site fast. If you’ve just started a blog, you should submit it to the large blog and feed directories.

Once you’ve submitted your blog to these directories, you’ll find your backlinks growing quickly. This past year, more webmasters are using RSS feeds on their sites to keep their sites fresh and spidered frequently.

After starting my first blog, I was amazed at how many different sites carried my feed with a link back to my site! These links can multiply exponentially over time.

Now tell me something. Wouldn’t you rather be spending your time adding content to your site than trying to get questionable reciprocal links? Especially when it doesn’t take any extra time?

3- A Frequently Updated Blog will Keep the Spiders Visiting Your Site Often:

Most of us are aware that the search engines like sites that are updated frequently. If you have your blog set up correctly, every post will update several pages of your site. Then pinging Yahoo and the blog and feed directories at Pingomatic can bring out the spiders in just a few hours. This is a great way to get new pages of your site indexed quickly and frequently.

4- Your Site is Stickier and More Appealing to Visitors:

A blog on your site is an easy way to keep your site updated on a regular basis. The upside is that visitors will come by more often. If they find your blog interesting and informative, they may bookmark your site. That means you have a much greater chance of making sales. And you have a ready-made audience for any new products you launch.

A blog can also add a human face to your website that potential customers will trust and respond to. Most marketers know that people buy from people they like and respect. A well-written blog is a great way to build a relationship with your visitors.

5- A Blog Is The Fastest And Easiest Way To Build A Brand-New Website Without Training:

Even a 10 year old could set up a blog at Blogger.com and be blogging almost immediately. No HTML knowledge is necessary. You don’t need to know how to FTP. You don’t need to know how to link the pages in your site together. All you have to do is type in your post and click on the “publish” button. And yet you can still set up an attractive, spiderable site in record time.

Blogs can be used for any type of site, not just for online ezine delivery or a place to announce new products. Using a blog you could quickly build a niche site. Just research the best keywords for your niche. Then write articles around those keywords and post them to your blog. Include your keywords in your title. You now have an instant niche site that will be spidered quickly and be easy to maintain.

6- Keyword competition in RSS feed sites is much less than in the SE’s:

Google, Yahoo, and MSN each have many millions of webpages in their indexes. It can be almost impossible to get top rankings for competitive keywords if you don’t have a high PR site with lots of backlinks.

It’s a completely different story at the RSS feed sites. The competition for many high-competition keywords is almost nonexistent. Setting up a blog in some of these high-competition niches is a good way to successfully compete.

Marketers spend a lot of time and money getting traffic to their sites, creating backlinks, getting good SE rankings, and building relationships with their customers. A blog can improve your results in all those areas. There aren’t very many free marketing techniques that can make that claim!

Asian Massage Therapy

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

There are several forms of ancient Asian massage still being practiced in the world today. Asian massage techniques are ancient healing rituals developed over the centuries in India and the Far East. Thai massage, shiatsu and asian massage are becoming more and more popular in the west as more people become interested in pilates, yoga and other more holistic forms of exercise and relaxation.

Thai massage actually started in India. It is a form of massage using guided stretching and Meridian pressure point therapy in combination with an ancient breathing method called Pranayama. This technique uses breathing techniques to relax and cleanse the body while strengthening the nervous system. Sessions usually end with a ritualized final relaxation that most customers find intensely restful.

Chinese acupressure or tui na was developed over 5000 years ago. By applying pressure to the body at certain key points, the acupressure therapist helps the body to activate its own self-healing abilities. Acupressure has been used for centuries to treat back pain, headaches and migraines, stress and anxiety. It is deeply relaxing and can have the added benefit of assisting the patient with weight management.

Japanese Shiatsu is another type of massage developed in the Far East. It concentrates on energy rebalance and physical well-being using the thumbs, palms and fingers to apply pressure to certain areas of the body. Benefits of this type of massage include rebalancing of the bone system, enhanced circulatory function, maintaining balance of the nervous system and greater skin and muscle flexibility.

Indonesian Javanese massage is a system of massage that uses all parts of the hand, including the knuckles, to knead and massage the muscles. Usually a massage oil is used to facilitate the therapy. This massage works on the muscles and nerves to relieve tension, back pain and aid in the healing of fractures. Of all of the Asian massages, this is the most robust, and the massage is often painful, although greatly beneficial in the long run.

Whatever your preferences, there are many ancient Asian massage treatments to choose from. Explore your massage options by adding one of these interesting and beneficial massages to your health regimen.

Technology Acceleration

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Copyright 2006 PJM Consulting

Technology is a GOOD THING. Well, most of the time it is.

Im sure youve seen articles bemoaning the NEGATIVE role that technology advancement has played in our lives. I have recently joined the ranks of those doing the bemoaning.

GADGETS ARE GREAT

Dont get me wrongIm a tech guy through and through. Ive chosen to work in the technology industry for 20 years, and I love gadgets as well as the next guy. Ive got TIVO, a laptop, a cell phone, Wi-Fi, all the standard Hi-Tech fare. Im an email fanatic. With great anticipation Im eyeing Home Theater equipment; just waiting for prices to drop a little more and for standards to settle a bit. I love many of the things that technology does to enrich our personal lives, and embrace the productivity improvements that it brings to doing business. And I believe that those who create new technologies and products ALMOST ALWAYS have good intentions, from a societal perspective.

THE LAW OF UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES

But I also believe that the law of unintended consequences is alive and thriving in the technology marketplace. In creating products and services that didnt previously exist in our world, the good is sometimes offset (and occasionally overwhelmed) by effects on the negative side of the ledger.

Take automobiles, for example. Certainly cars are no longer an example of new technology. But at the turn of the century, they represented one of the greatest leaps forward in technology, and have had wide-ranging, positive societal effects. Autos provided a completely different level of personal mobility, with too many positive effects on our daily lives to list. For businesses, the enhanced business productivity was so enormous that it not only lowered costs, but also allowed totally new businesses to be conceived. Autos and the internal combustion engine that enabled them are truly among the great inventions of all time.

However, do you think the inventors or the internal combustion engine and the automobile had the foresight to envision the amount of pollution this invention has ultimately created? Not to mention the greenhouse gas effect, that is actually causing significant warming to our global climate, with potentially devastating consequences?

Of course, they couldnt. I think this should cause those of us in the technology biz to pause and reflect a bit.

NEGATIVES WITH POSITIVES

There are many more innovations that one could list having major negatives associated with great leaps forward. Cell Phones are another such example. They have provided a leap forward in society that while not quite as profound as automobiles, approaches the same level. Theyve provided great productivity gains for businesses, and have allowed us to stay connected in our personal lives like never before. But havent they also contributed negatively to our ability to get away, relax. and enjoy some uninterrupted privacy? I feel this has been a big negative for society, and its one of those steps that probably cant be undone.

I think even the most driven Type As among us believe that human beings need at least SOME time to recharge our batteries. Just to get away from it all and relax. Technological advancements have connected us to the extent that its very hard to do that. You used to be able to take a vacation or a day off, and honestly say you didnt have a phone or an Internet connection available. If you say that now, people might begin to question your veracity. Its possible to be connected nearly everywhereas a result, it becomes less acceptable than ever be disconnected.

This leads to the biggest complaint I have about the unintended consequences of the technology revolution:

The general speeding up of our lives.

Im exhausted–I’ll bet you are too For context, most people would consider me a type A personality. So this isnt the complaint of some mellow, laid-back surfer dude. I generally embrace a fast paced life, and particularly enjoy the ability to make progress in business in a rapid-fire matter. But honesty compels me to admit that, at times, the pace of modern life even overwhelms me.

I live out the most gnawing example of this Acceleration of our lives every day on the freeways of Southern California. I live in San Diego, which granted is a big city. And big city traffic has, of course, never been much fun. But San Diego isnt New York or Paris by any stretch of the imagination, when it comes to congestion, or the attitudes of the locals. So I dont think Im reaching for the extreme here.

Compared to even 10-15 years ago, life on the freeways has become hell. I am a pretty fast driver, but on the freeway, its never fast enough. No matter how fast you want to go, there is always someone coming fast upon youtailgating and itching to get past you. And it isnt enough to just get around you. The guys in the BMW 3 series have to accelerate and weave in and out of traffic like its the 20th lap at LeMans.

Those guys have always existed on the highway, you say. And youre right. But the lack of common sense and courtesy seems to have spread throughout the driver-sphere like a bad flu. These days, you try to move into a lane in front of a soccer mom in a huge SUV at your own peril. She may be toting two kids in the back, and of course is talking on her cell phone (those cell phones again!). But shes also caught that LeMans mentality, and no way shes going to intentionally concede that positionlet alone the extra ten feet of highway to a competitor.

I find it especially ironic how the technology acceleration has made other pieces of useful technology obsolete. My favorite is how the speedup on the freeways has eliminated the need for what was once an essential piece of safety technology for drivers: the indicator. It no longer serves a useful purpose on the road. Should you put your indicator on before changing lanes in front of that soccer mom? Ten years ago you certainly should have. But 2005 soccer mom puts the pedal to the medal and cuts you off to prevent you from moving up a spot in the unofficial Freeway LeMans. These days, using this once essential technology now only indicates to everyone else that its time speed up to prevent you from making that lane change! God forbid you need to get to that lane to exit the highway; that next exit better suffice if you dont want to risk a crash. Soccer moms dont glare at you menacingly while doing while cutting you off like the guys in the BMW 3 series will, but the effect is just the same. It’s a jungle out there.

So whats the takeaway to this rant?

CAN DOWNTIME MAKE A COMBACK

Once again, I believe that the law of unintended consequences is hard at work. There is a big market being created that while not completely ignored, is underserved. Thats the market for enabling our lives to slow back down. Dont misunderstand. I dont mean giving us more time in the day. That time generated by productivity-enhancing devices seems to just fill back up with more frenetic activity. I mean actually slowing us down, so we can re-charge to sprint another day. This might be a difficult concept for companies to get their arms around, so that they can create new products and services to capitalize on it. But business formation and product creation around this theme would be really revolutionary, and potentially very rewarding.

So the next time youre sitting on the side of the road with a flat tireand a dead cell phone battery write me a note. Assuming your wireless Internet connection is still up. Id love to get your thoughts.

Conquering the Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Since its discovery in 1928 by the Scottish scientist named Sir Ian Fleming, doctors have been prescribing penicillin to patients for the cure of everything from minor infections to life-threatening diseases. In medical terms, penicillin is classified as an antibiotic. An antibiotic is a chemical compound that inhibits or abolishes the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoa. Over 100 different antibiotics are now available in the market. Although antibiotics are useful in a wide variety of infections, it is important to note that antibiotics only treat bacterial infections.

Get All Of The Facts In Dealing With Your Fears And Phobias

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

When dealing with our persistent fears and phobias, it is easy to let our imagination get the better of us. Our negative and scary thoughts can overcome the reality of the situation and can make things worse than what they really are. As a result, here are some techniques a person can use to help gain a better perspective of your fearful situation.

The most important thing is to get all of the facts of the situation. Gathering the facts can prevent us from relying on exaggerated and fearful assumptions. By focusing on the facts, a person can rely on what is reality and what is not.

Do not let your negative thoughts get the better of you. Replace those negative thoughts with positive statements that represent the reality of your situation. Remember that our worrying and fears can make the problem even worse.

Sometimes, we may lack the self-confidence of doing a certain task that may be scary. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you and your team have to play in the championship hockey game in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that your playing in front of a large audience. By playing the game in your mind, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation.

If you have trouble overcoming your phobias, remember to learn from your mistakes and to give it another try. Doing anything in life requires practice and persistence. For example, remember the time when you first learned to ride a bike. The first few times, you kept following off the bike. With some practice and some time, you were able to ride your bike with no problem. Everything we do is a learning experience so do not get discouraged if you dont make it on the first or second time.

As a layman, I realize it is not easy to overcome our phobias. Take things in stride and try not focus too much on the problem. In time, you will find the ways to overcome your phobia. If you have trouble, talk to a professional who can give you additional insights on your situation.

Body Care Shows That You Care

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Few things show that you care about your life, your happiness, your relationships and ultimately your destiny like good body care. You only have one life to live, so why not live it well. Why not take the time and effort to have good body care and to love yourself.

Good body care is easy and hard all at the same time. It is easy in that it is really possible to have a longer, healthier life if you have good body care habits now. It is hard, however, because it means breaking old habits and working hard to make new habits. Begin any new body care program first by making goals for yourself. Where do you want to be in a year? What kind of life do you want to be living? What kind of health and fitness do you want to have? Starting your body care with goals and then sharing them with someone is one of the most effective ways to make victory possible.

Body care begins with really caring about your body. It sounds simple and redundant even, but it is true. You will never see significant changes in the condition of your body unless you deeply care that your body is healthy and vibrant. I don’t know what it will take for you to be really convinced about the importance of good body care. I can only hope that you have read enough health warnings and perhaps even seen what poor health has done to your family and friends enough to make changes for yourself.

One of the first and easiest ways to improve your body care is to drink water. Replace many of the sugar-filled and caffeine-filled drinks you’re used to with water. You will notice a difference in your energy levels, your skin, and your appetite in a short time. Water is one of the best ways to take good body care.

Another obvious and important element to good body care is getting more active. This doesn’t mean you have to sign up to run the next local marathoon, but it does mean that you have to make time for twenty to thirty minutes of cardio exercise at least every other day. Go for a brisk walk or a jog, play a game of tennis. Do things you enjoy. The important thing for good body care is that you are active. Inactivity is one of the most dangerous ways to live.

A third and final thing in good body care is your diet. Grab a couple of health books and begin learning about the things you should be eating and the things you must avoid. Educate yourself and then begin to implement changes to fit your lifestyle, budget, and goals.

The health of your body is worth any body care program you begin. I promise you.

TiVo: A Revolution in Digital Video Recording

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

The latest advancement in the recording technology has transcended all boundaries and has brought convenience to your doorstep. The top American channels can be accessed and viewed at your leisure with the TIVO or the Digital Video Recorder.

A common term that is synonymous with TIVO is personal video recorder (PVR). The latter is a consumer video device which has the ability to capture television programming and store it on an internal hard drive to be viewed at anytime in the future.

No longer do you have to schedule your plans around your favorite television program. Let your favorite shows and programs be watched anytime and watched over and over again.

Having a TIVO gives you the option to select your preferred programs to record either by time, specific program title, or by amalgamation of genre, actors and directors etc. All programs will remain intact until it is manually deleted to give room for newly recorded items.

The capacity of the internal storage is enormous and can accommodate most of your favorite shows. The database of programs available is determined by the customers location and their cable/satellite services and is updated daily over the phone or network connection to TIVO control center. The TIVO system is comprised of a non-removable hard drive as well as sophisticated software that allows users to easily program and record their selected shows. The software can even be set to record shows it thinks the viewer may be interested in based on their viewing habits!

You can even pause, rewind, and fast forward the recorded programs just as if you were viewing them on a VCR or DVD.player, but there are no messy tapes or discs to keep track of. If you are recording a program, you can still watch it in real-time as well.

TIVO guarantees that the digitally recorded images are received, stored, and played without any weakening in the quality of the image. Videos that are digitally stored will retain the same quality as the day the image was recorded.

TIVO also offers a user rating system where viewers can score the television shows they watch on a scale which ranges from three “thumbs up” or three “thumbs down”. These ratings are then used to further determine the users preferences and recommendations are suggested based in part on these ratings.

“Season passes” instruct TiVo to record a show each time it is aired on television regardless of when the show begins, with the option of ignoring reruns. Award-winning features such as Wish List searches and TIVO Online Scheduling have made TIVO a necessity for every household. The home entertainment innovations provided by TIVO surpasses features of a television possessing digital music, snapshot, and picture in picture features. The inlcusion of TIVO To Go allows for the transfer of shows to your laptop or DVD.

You can always be up to date with the current programming on your television as your TIVO routinely will keep you updated with the daily programming. The sophisticated technology combined with the user-friendly navigation allows you to search for programs just by using the remote.

The only drawback of the TIVO system is a minor one. It requires a land-based phone line to ensure successful activation and full functionality of the DVR service. This may be a problem for some customers as more and more people are canceling their land-line phone service and relying solely on their cell phone.

Your television set up is not an issue for you to make a TIVO acceptable to every household. It can be traditional cable, digital cable, satellite, or even combinations of these. TIVO is proving itself as a viable and efficient companion to your home theater system that pledges to be useful and economical.

How To Make Big Money With Your Band

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Being a musician for many years now, all I ever wanted to do was to be able to make a good living by doing what I can’t do without, which is performing and writing music. Its a blessing to be on a stage looking out over a big room full of people to share your music with. You’ll never experience a feeling like it. Just the satisfaction of knowing that for that moment in time you are completely understood. Its extremely gratifying and addictive.

Over the years, its become evident to me that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Its only natural to want the band that your in to be a success. I’ve received letters for years from people just like you wanting to know how to grow their fan base and how to turn their craft into something profitable. Well, you can do these two things at the same time. Right now, I’m putting the finishing touches on a book that actually shows you everything you need to know about how to become a successful band. And its not just for beginners either, this book should be an essential for any band who wants to quickly become a fan favorite and start making serious money. I will tell you how you can get your hands on a copy of it a little bit later, but first I want to touch on a few things that’s in the book.

First, I hate to be the one who has to tell you this, but these days its practically impossible to be a success on the music alone. There are actually a few things that fans take into consideration when deciding to like your band, and all of these things will be explained in the book. I will show you how to get out of the garage and onto a stage. And, yes it does matter where the guitar player, the bass player, the keyboardist(if you have one), the drummer, and the singer is positioned on stage. Or if you have anybody else in your band, such as back up singers and/or a horn section, I will also teach you all of that too, in a chapter called “the successful band formula”.

The real important thing to know if your in a band is you need a forever growing following. That’s essential for the success of a band. And the only way to know that is as a band, you are a creative entity and a business. I know as the artist that you are, I know the last sentence is a hard one to swallow, and deservingly so, but for the public to like you, they have to be able to take you home with them and think about you. And they do that with products such as c.d.’s, shirts, etc. It is very important to bring band recordings to your shows to sell. If you don’t have any other products, you should at least have c.d.’s. It gives you extra income and more importantly, it gives your ever growing audience the opportunity to get familiar with your music.

Presentation is the key to being well liked at your shows. Your first shows should be all about winning the whole crowd over, and the only way you can do that is very good, well rehearsed presentation. And that’s not just rehearsing your music. Presentation is the show as a whole. From the stage show to your backdrop to the table where your products are sold and the people behind the table helping you sell the products. It should be a well oiled, fine tuned machine. All of that will be explained in entirety in the book.

Another point to take into consideration is to not only have a band onstage, but an act. Every member in the band plays a different character. That is also very important and all to often overlooked in a band. To have each member of the band’s character relate to everybody. It gives the audience the feeling that they know you and can relate to you. And that draws them in even closer and that’s what you want to happen, because it enhances the overall product that your providing to them. And you are the only band around that they can get that from. In the book, I will teach you how to make a character and bring it to life, as well as to develop that character as more time passes.

If you are serious about having a devout following, you should seriously consider getting this book. Your going to get so much more important information for you to have. And like I said, its not just for a band that’s just starting out. Any band that’s interested in making good money and giving the audience a really good, memorable, and professional show should have this book. It will show you how to put on a really good show.

If you had a professional manager or agent, this book will teach you everything that they would want you to know. That in itself will attract them to you. Not to mention teach you how to get the major record labels to pay attention to you.

You could pay hundreds of dollars for this information and it would be worth every penny, but you won’t. In fact, you won’t pay anywhere near it. For the price of four packs of guitar strings you will get all of the valuable information inside this book. Satisfaction guaranteed. Just write to me to receive more information and how to order: Barry Ford 205 Terry Loop Rd. Cordova, Alabama 35550.
As always, I hope you found this article both informative and entertaining. And may GOD bless you always, and in always.

7 Tips For Better Online Banking

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Banking has never been easier than it is today. Online banking allows you to access your bank at any time of day or night. You can even do this dressed in your underwear if you like. And if you choose to do it that way, its just as well there are no lines to wait in for online banks.

1. Probably the first thing to consider with online banking is the convenience. You can access your bank via the Internet at any time of day or night, even while lying in bed if you like.

2. Transaction performed online are generally much cheaper than those done over the counter at a bank branch. You can pay bills, transfer cash, check balances, and much more for much less.

3. Online savings accounts is something worth considering. The interest rates are usually higher and the fees are lower than traditional bricks and mortar bank branches.

4. Your computer has convenient ways to help you remember your login details. But dont use the remember my password option if your computer suggests it. Keep your bank login details very safe and very secret.

5. Most online banks will allow you change your password. This is a very good idea and something you should do regularly. Of course, you must also remember your new password each time it is changed.

6. Logging on to your online bank is easy and very convenient. But after you have completed your business, remember to log out of your online bank again. This is especially important if you access your bank from a library, at work, or in a cyber caf.

7. Enjoy your online banking, but beware of any email you receive asking you to verify your bank details by clicking a link. The site may look authentic, but it will probably be a fake. Respectable banks dont ask anyone to verify details by email.

You Can Quit Too After 42 Years

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Why and how you should quit smoking

53 years ago I had a friend and she was a girl.(not an official Girlfriend).

Her mom smoked and worked during the day so daughter used to pinch her smokes and shared them with me. Both my parents smoked as well.

So off and on I got used to smoking; my smoking got a real boost when I became a sailor at the age of 17, because you could buy cigarettes tax-free when you were outside territorial waters.

Over time I started smoking more and more cigarettes and had to get up a couple of times a night to have another nicotine fix.

Life without cigarettes was just not imaginable.

Going on an airline trip was sheer torture because I could not smoke for a couple of hours.

We flew to Singapore once and I had a couple of smokes in the washroom in spite of the fact that airplanes were already putting people in jail for smoking.

Over the years half of my mom’s family died of lung cancer.

My dad’s only sibling died of lung cancer.

My mom died of a brain tumor-she used to be a heavy smoker.

My dad got lung cancer.

After he got lung cancer he visited me; he was a pathetic skin over bones man now, wearing a corduroy suit, BUT STILL SMOKING IN MY GARAGE.

My brother’s wife has breast cancer; my brother still smokes cigars.

I started having coughing spells at night and the vision in my left eye was deteriorating.

Me quitting smoking? Impossible- I have no willpower.

Because I knew I could not quit I never even bothered to buy Nicorette or any other stuff.

So after a whole lifetime of smoking I was going to die of lung cancer too.

BUT WAIT: the story is not finished yet.

On September 4, 2002 I was in Calgary browsing in a bookstore called Brown and Noble and a book jumped out at me.

The book was called “How to stop smoking” and had 385 pages in it.

I glanced at the first couple of pages where the author boasted that this book was the only way to quit smoking without any withdrawal symptoms or without the Patch.

I bought the book because I was curious as to what you could write 385 pages about how to quit smoking.

It took me 9 days to read the book.

On September 13, 2002 at 3 PM I took my last drag and exhaled it through a Kleenex.

That was my last cigarette. I have never even thought about smoking. People can smoke around me and I don’t give it a thought.

The book changes your Mindset.

The book is called “How to stop smoking” by Allan Carr, a British Accountant and is not available in the United States.

I no longer cough at night and the vision in my left eye is fine now.

Common Cold Care and Prevention

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

For all its findings, discoveries, and achievements, medical science still has yet to come up with a cure. Common cold occurs more often than any other disease hence, its name. There are approximately 200 viruses that can cause a cold. Most colds are caused by rhinoviruses (the name comes from rhin, the Greek word for nose) that are in invisible droplets in the air we breathe or on the things we touch. Aside from rhinoviruses, there are more than 100 subtypes that cause up to half of all colds. They can infiltrate the protective lining of the nose and throat, triggering an immune system reaction that can lead to sore throat, headache, and experience difficulty breathing through the nose. A common cold results from exposure to the virus. Infections are spread from one person to another, by hand-to-hand contact, or by a cough or sneeze that sprays many virus particles into the air. Its intensity, however, depends upon the state of health of the person and environmental factors.

Tanning Beds – A Great Complement To The Sun

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Going to the seaside to get tanned has been a luxury with many from time immemorial. A lovely golden brown skin is a matter of pride for many young ladies and gentlemen. A bleak and harsh winter makes the idea of spending hours in sunshine very appealing.

It is a fact that exposing the skin to the suns rays for long hours does more harm than good. The suns ultra violet rays cause skin cancer apart from minor irritants like sunburns.

The tanning beds seem to be a solution to this problem, as people can get tanned without any side effects. But the origin of tanning beds is rooted in medicine. In the early twentieth century it was developed, to see if increased sunlight combats calcium deficiency.

But this is a misconception. Tanning beds also expose people to health hazards. They give off long wave ultra violet rays which are more harmful than short wave ultra violet rays.

Tanning beds have components that require regular maintenance. Some of the important components are tanning bed bulbs, internal fans, remote cable assembly, and lamp holder.

Tanning beds are used both in home and tanning salons. Tanning beds in salons are clamshell shaped. Tanning salons have drawn a lot of flak because of health concerns. Prior appointment is needed to tan in a salon. Home tanning beds are convenient and can be used any time of the day or night.

These beds are expensive. Many manufacturers offer warranties for more than a year and detailed literature about the product. Tanning beds are found all over the world.

It is advisable to use tanning beds with caution. Long exposure can cause burns. Pregnant women should not use these beds. The basic concern about over usage of these beds is related to cancer as basil cell sarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and the most dangerous melanoma can occur. Skin cancer is the most serious side effect, but there are other side effects also. Apart from burning the skin, it causes the skin to become wrinkled and over exposure results in cataract. This in turn gives an old look.

Tanning beds and tanning salons are now big business. Manufacturers and salon owners paint a rosy picture, but people should be told about the harmful side as well. Only a very judicious use of these beds is recommended. Tanning might bring a low in looks, but risking health is also foolhardy.
